Yunlin is Taiwan’s largest agricultural city and the hometown of artist Lin Yu-Sheng. Since the establishment of the 6th Naphtha Cracker Plant in Mailiao, Yunlin County, plasticized poisons have been causing irreversible pollution to the environment. Artist Lin Yu-Sheng could not return to his hometown to live, so he started an art action project, “My Mobile Garden.” He installed a miniature vegetable garden, proportioned to the shape of the 6th Naphtha Cracker and its industrial park, and filled it with contaminated soil. He planted crops in it in an attempt to restore the soil quality in this vegetable garden. However, once the green plants he successfully planted turned golden after they were exposed to plasticizer. This only made these highly toxic plants look more valuable. He arranged these golden plants into rings and the symbols for recycling and packed them into boxes. On the inside of the box lid he put photos of the moving garden, as a contrast with the golden crops. Through this work, the artist continues to raise questions and reflections about himself and his hometown, the people and the land, and the economy and environment.
