Artist Chen Yun’s recent creations are mostly landscapes, and she uses reductive cutting techniques on resin plates to make relief prints. She thinks that because resin plates are soft and easier to leave indentations in comparison with harder plates such as wood boards or linoleum plates, they can produce finer, more delicate line expressions. In her work Mountain Climbing, she uses two prints, left and right, to present what one sees when “looking all around among layers of mountains.” Chen Yun also uses connected compositions but with different tonal designs that express different atmospheres of the mountain scenery. The artist uses gentle pencil strokes instead of sharp engraving knives to create free, smooth lines on the resin plate, as with sketching. If you look carefully, you can find that the ground, mountains, and trees all have different brushstrokes, and each color is intertwined with soft, confident lines, repeatedly stacked to form the mountain scenery in memory and imagination.
