Looking out the window over an antique stone washbasin was a daily scene for artist Kao Chia-Hong, but he created this print after he moved away from Taichung, where he had lived for twelve years. In the picture, the morning sun makes the scene somewhat backlit, and the plants on the sill become silhouettes. The work was made using five large, almost full-size plates. The washbasin and the pillars with small tiles on the left and right sides were made using paper matrix intaglio. The plant parts were made with acrylic matrix intaglio, then printed layer by layer using the mounting technique to create an airy perspective effect, a sense of haziness beyond the sink. Kao also used the unevenness produced when the paper was peeled from the paper plate in order to create a realistic mottled effect. He preserved the familiar scenes in his memory forever through such delicate and intricate works.
