Based on artist Chen Pei-Yun’s own experience, she reflects on the unequal treatment between female athletes and male athletes, as well as the phenomenon that the general public often uses stereotypes to judge women’s appearance. Chen Pei Yun creates works in the form of traditional East Asian “beauty paintings,” and deliberately presents the multiple aspects of women, breaking with monotonous images that are limited to the soft aspect. Regardless of hair length, clothing, or surrounding objects, the women in her works show different levels of beauty, forming a visual contrast. She feels that it is easy for society to judge a person’s appearance based on gender stereotypes, and to give wrong interpretations when the other person does not meet expectations. However, she believes that people cannot judge personal tendencies or preferences based on appearance alone, so she hopes to break the gender framework through her works, inspire more diverse levels of thinking, and she calls on the public to re-examine the status of female athletes.
