The work Bolero (Taipei) is a creation from artist Su Wan-Ting’s “Island of Fantasy” series. She cut wooden boards into the outlines of Taiwan’s counties and cities, and then improvised on the board, exploring how to bring the flow of imagination within the framework of county and city boundaries, and to gaze at Taiwan through different colors to create a beautiful visual experience. The shape of the work is inspired by the shape of the Greater Taipei Administrative District, the purple is Dadaocheng, and the oldest existing Western restaurant in Taiwan, Bolero Restaurant, was the inspiration. During the Japanese colonial period, dining at Bolero symbolized popularity and lavish consumption; the flowing purple lines are associated with elegance and mystery. When the artist created it, she transformed the outlines of counties and cities into imaginative objects, so that they are no longer just geographical boundaries, but create the possibility of spiritual flow, interest, and appreciation.
