Artist Tsai Tsung-Yu uses scenes that he sees while riding his scooter in the Chiayi and Tainan area, like the roads running through the cities, or the trails and villages in the mountains and seaside. But for him, painting is a way to escape from reality, since it lets him see things with cold objectivity, from a wanderer’s perspective, and keep a distance from reality, and in this way, he believes that he will always be able to find his niche in the hurly-burly of the art world. His work Guanziling Biyun Temple depicts the huge Guanyin statue standing on a lotus in front of that temple, from a distant perspective. He used the dotting technique of ink and wash painting to depict the leaves on the trees surrounding the statue. In terms of color, Tsai Tsung-Yu deliberately chose colors that go against expectations to depict the scenery, making the work escape from realistic landscape. The orange circle under the statue and the dark brown sky give the picture a strong dramatic effect.
