This tetraptych, Daily Proportions, is one of the works in artist Chen Shiau-Peng’s “Unitopia” series. The artist herself derived the word “Unitopia” from “Utopia,” and the subordinate titles of this series, Unique and Unify, refer to Chen’s belief that our lives may often be much the same at first glance, when each is different. The artist used simple beige as the base color in this four-part group of creations, using only black, gray, and silver to show a sense of order. She also used “cross signs” to show different scenes in life, such as the cross that is focused when the shutter is pressed, the cross-shaped window one may see in a Chinese garden, the traffic sign signaling a crossroad ahead, and the cross-shaped plaza. Together they show how people are geometrically restricted and live within the framework of the cross.
