作品賞析
Artist Jam Wu is called a poet who scissors light and shadow; his works are full of mysterious and primitive imagery. The initial idea for the “Bonfire” series comes from the way groups of people would gather around fire; it symbolizes the origins of human civilization. He used paper-cutting techniques to create images of mother’s bodies, plank boats, houses, and so on, on thin hemp paper, and he colored them with acrylic paint. He then used weaving techniques to weave the images together with research reports on Austronesian cultures. For Jam Wu, “weaving” is also a way to deconstruct images, and hemp paper, which is extremely thin, can better present the weaving effect. Transparent yellow and red acrylics allow the text of the reports in the background to be faintly visible, creating a subtle dialogue between the text and the images. While exploring the limits of paper as a medium, Jam Wu also gives Taiwan subjectivity to the folk art of “paper cutting.”
