Can you tell which part of the work Dormitory Items—Air Conditioner is real and which is painted? Artist Tsai Yu-Hsin first cut away and polished a wooden board so that it showed the shapes of an air conditioner and a socket, then painted them. The creative inspiration came from his boredom from living in a dormitory and confronting many art theories and concepts every day. Besides having to think about writing dissertation, he also felt hesitant about the future. However, a certain rebellious spirit in Tsai’s heart made him do the opposite of what was expected—he chose the most mundane, boring items he encountered every day as themes for recreating his boring life! For his “Dormitory Items” series, he chose the most common rectangular shapes, such as doors, lighting fixtures, and the air conditioner and socket before you. Tsai Yu-Hsin uses the techniques of realistic oil painting and meticulous layering of the oils in order to create images so realistic they can fool the eye, and he hopes to evoke certain memories in viewers’ minds.
