While the war between Ukraine and Russia has not yet ended and rampant inflation continues to sweep the world, the Ministry of National Defense released its National Defense Manual for the first time on its official website. This made artist Chang Ling realize that Taiwan was in a tense political situation, so he chose to respond to the various challenges through his paintings. In the painting, small black-silhouetted figures seem to be fighting with guns, while black planes cross the sky overhead and giant missiles fall to the ground. The colors and lines are bold and unconstrained, and he interprets the battle scene in a playful and humorous way. Chang Ling never makes a draft when he paints—he believes that sketching out a picture and then coloring it becomes a kind of self-imitation and copy, thus losing the creativity. For him, painting is a kind of body language, but because the movements of the wrist are carefully guided by rational thought, he avoids using the wrist and instead uses the rhythms of the body to paint, rotating his body against the canvas to leave traces on it, to fill the work with rhythm and musicality.
