As people spent more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, video games became a way for many people to pass the time. From this experience, artist Chiu Yi-Chen developed this work, Going in Circles 2, which is relaxed, interesting, and full of meaning. He first simulated and drew a game scene similar to one in Super Mario Bros. But he transformed the original horizontal movement into an unending circle — a metaphor for the way how life seems to be a series of obstacles that people struggle to overcome in the end, they have returned to the starting point, prompting reflection on the meaning of life. Inspired by European church dome murals, the artist painted the sky background, with clouds seeming to go around on star trails. He puts an upward-looking perspective into a two-dimensional painting, making the viewer feel as if he or she is traveling in a virtual universe.
