Sandy Island is an island that has never been actually seen and exists only on maps, near the French territory of New Caledonia. It was only in recent years that it was confirmed that this was just an error in the hand-drawn maps in the past. However, Google Maps still retains Sandy Island in the form of a “black afterimage.” The artist Chen Hsiang-Fu interpreted this as an example of subconscious behavior, analogous to the way some people believe that the “Peach Blossom Spring” may be real. Inspired by this, she created Copies of Phantasm, comprised of five works of different sizes, but when combined into one, they create the sense of a tunnel. Between opening and closing, one can vaguely see things that are like projections of the imagination and explorations of unknown spaces. Copies of Phantasm – S is the smallest piece of the five. Chen Hsiang-Fu made it from stainless steel and aluminum alloy. The inner ring imitates the slow opening and closing of a camera shutter. She shaped the shutter blades into the shape of feathers, thus softening the coldness of the metal and giving the work a sense of lightness. It symbolizes the call of the unknown.
