Because both of her parents are sculptors, artist Chuang Yen-Ting has been steeped in art since childhood. In her creations, she mostly uses calligraphy, graffiti, and sculpture to depict her strange re-imagining of daily life. Her Serendipity, a bronze sculpture of a bird, was first modelled by outlining a bird’s form with a calligraphy brush, after which the bronze sculpture was made. It has a long, pointed beak but two slender legs ending on hook-shaped feet, and it is seated, with feet extended forward. Converting the lines of the model into a sculpted form was quite challenging. She had to experiment with different clay shapes and casting and polishing processes to reveal the arc and detail of the lines. This seated bird derives from an earlier work of hers, A Blossoming Tree, which she did when she first arrived in New York to study. There was a restless-looking bird that always appeared under a tree for several years, but its mood suddenly changed, and it left the tree where it had waited for so long, to start a new adventure.
