The possibility of climbing

Artist Tuan Tsun-Chen believes that cities are the concrete manifestation of local culture, carrying the life trajectories and emotions of all residents. The Possibility of Climbing was inspired by the Spanish city of Ávila, a high-altitude city surrounded by towering medieval walls. To see the scenery inside and outside the city, Tuan had to keep climbing until he reached its highest point. From this, he realized that “climbing” was a kind of equal exchange with the city: the city he had passed through was exchanged for an anticipated imagination. He deconstructed architectural elements such as city walls and stairs into simple geometric elements, and then reorganized them in a poetic way. Cement requires the repeating of tasks such as turning molds, grinding the surface, and so on, in order to create the ideal work. This is in line with his experience while living in Europe, and it also fits his impression of Taiwan, with its cities made of concrete.
