Island, Four Seasons

The artist Chiu Li-Ying, who loves photography, uses photos taken in Taiwan and other places around the world as her raw material, then extracts the images and recombines them into one after another isolated, closed-off island. In her Islands, Four Seasons, she created one island using the dense, yellow-green Eurasian wryneck trees in Liuying, Tainan County. The wintry island with white mist and snow is taken from a snowy scene that she once photographed in Japan. Birds can be seen on each of the islands, whether swimming leisurely on the surrounding water or hovering in the sky, or perched on the treetops or standing on the ground. The birds’ movements bring the finishing touch to these quiet islands. Chiu uses “HD metal printing” to create her works. This is a method of printing images on aluminum plates through thermal transfer, which makes the finished work more lustrous and effectively preserved.
