The Snow in July is a ceramic work created by the artist Lee Kuo-Wei, who weaves his beautiful childhood memories of Dawu Mountain with his memories of living in a village in the United States as an adult. For the pattern on the surface, he used the indigo carving technique, which emerged in the late tenth century in China and is somewhat similar to the technique of printmaking. The clay body of the vessel was first covered with black slip, which was then incised with the pattern and fired for the first time. Then, before firing for the second time, he applied white glaze on the three peaks in the top part of the work and a thin layer of transparent glaze on the black plant pattern. After the firing was completed, the white peaks looked like a line of mountains covered with mist and white snow. Around the base of the mountain, the black plant pattern with a transparent glaze represents the lush vegetation on the mountains. A simple black and white contrast is used to express calmness, but at the same time it responds to his experiences of making ink stereotype prints as a university student.
