Artist Wu Cheng-Chang’s “Paddy Scenery Series” is inspired by the scenes he saw while commuting between Taichung and Changhua. Agricultural land on Taiwan’s west coast is often adjacent to industrial land, and sheet metal buildings are often next to green rice paddies. With the rise of industry and technology, agricultural land is constantly being encroached upon, but people seem to have become used to it. Wu divided his work into two sections, each retaining only the two elements of farmland and sheets of metal. The flat image presents the characteristic scenery of west coast farmland, and also allows the viewer’s vision to focus on the balance between “industrial development” and “agricultural preservation,” thereby provoking reflection on the entanglement between industry and agriculture. In the field of photography, the visible elements cannot reflect the entire reality, but the deliberately narrowed visible range is not necessarily a limitation—it may also present new creative opportunities, like the “idyllic scenery” that has been redefined here.
