Artist Chen Poh-Sin loved Eastern gouache painting, so he decided to study in Japan and focus on studying the characteristics of mineral painting materials. His creations derive mainly from his experiences, and he uses Japanese-style painting as a medium for expressing his thoughts. His Cloudy to Clear was created during the pandemic, when people were forced to stop normal social activities and felt depressed. Meanwhile, Chen Poh-Sin was dealing with a creative block and felt lonely and confused. Then, by chance near a roadside shrine, he saw the trunk of a gingko tree that had been cut down producing new leaves. This sign of vitality seemed to make everything hopeful and motivated him to create. To draw the tree trunk, he used fine, delicate lines, and he used a slightly reflective metal paste to depict the new leaves on the tree and give the painting a shimmering light, which vaguely symbolized getting rid of the depression.
