When the artist Hsu Pei-Hsin went on a working holiday in Australia, she found that the lifestyle was completely different from that of Taiwan. In Australia, she often had to drive—it seemed that her home was the car, which carried all her belongings. This related closely to her core artistic theme, which centers on the home. She painted Fog based on what she saw and felt at that time. She used mainly gouache, painting the colors layer by layer, and she used a spraying technique for the starry pre-dawn sky. There is a straight stretch of road at the center of the painting, so the viewer’s focus is also centered to where the road disappears into the distance. The two cars on the road are each moving forward in opposite directions, but they are very close to each other—the kind of situation that makes one break into a cold sweat. Meanwhile, there are wild animals in the woods off to the side, suggesting another danger to watch out for. In moments like these, one wakes up instantly.
