Artist Chang Yun-Chia often explores the process of disappearance and decline through her creations. In The Scenery You Left Behind, only the ruins of a house remain, though several potted plants are neatly arranged in the center. It seems these potted plants were once carefully tended, but now they are abandoned and withered. Chang Yun-Chia used the thick or fine particles of natural mineral powder to create special textures, and used the technique of layering the pigments to create a three-dimensional effect simulating the texture of building walls, brickwork, cement, and earth. Gouache was added over silver foil to create a flowing visual effect. The low chroma background and the centered composition create a sense of isolation in the ruins of the old house. Its time will be forever frozen in that moment. For Chang Yun-Chia, such ruins retain the memories of the people of the past as well as traces of the process of decline, which is both poetic and surreal.
