Artist Shao Shi-Ming’s Sudden Rain subtly depicts a scene during a heavy rain. The man in the foreground has a strange smile on his face as he glances back at another person shielding himself with his jacket and hurrying through the rain. He smiles strangely at the running person’s misfortune. Shao always transforms the indescribable but unforgettable moments in life into his compositions. He loves observing narrow alleys and not-so-pretty street corners. Low-saturation colors dominate the painting, and ink and wash are used to create a dark atmosphere. Silver foil is used for the depiction of the concrete walls and floors, but sulfur was used to oxidize and blacken it, creating a mottled texture. By constructing such scenes in his paintings, he allows himself to be projected into the depicted figures depicted; they are like one one-man show after another.
