Artist Lee Tsai-En often draws inspiration from the things around her. This work, Rain, which was inspired from riverside scenery in the Wulai Mountains, is an extension of another acquired work in this collection, River. She transformed her perception of things as she internalized them and added her own emotions. Here she used a simple composition, focusing on a single part of a riverbank and delicately depicting the rock shapes and textures. She used the “filling” technique of Eastern gouache painting and the “standing powder” technique of ink painting to pile up layers of pigment and create a relief-like effect in the three-dimensional thickness of the rocks. After leaving the wrinkles in the rock blank, she filled them with pigment, showing lines in the rock of different depth that have been washed out by the rain. The river flowing past the bank is simply rendered with ink and color. The overall palette of the composition is light and elegant, showing the artist’s impression of the riverbank in the Wulai Mountains.
