Behind every one of artist Yen Ching-chieh’s artworks, there is a hidden story. In Resident of Flower Planet—Blossom, there is a giant, powerful-looking humanoid figure standing majestically in the center of the painting—but it looks as if it is made of pink roses and rose petals. In Yen Ching-chieh’s imaginary universe, human beings wander through space searching for a planet suitable for human habitation. After returning to earth hundreds of years later, they find that the living things on earth have taken on entirely different appearances. These newly evolved species have brought together the once separate advantages of the plant and animal kingdoms in order to fight and survive earth’s environmental and climatic changes. The huge blossoms on these flowerlike beings are conducive to the reproduction of future generations, while their limbs and torsos can move quickly. By carefully observing the characteristics of animals and flowering plants and then combining them to form his own imaginary creatures of the future, Yen creates a unique world where reality and make-believe are intertwined.
