In The Fairy Bird Secluded Lake Series–The Sun, the two “fairy” birds facing each other are characters created by artist Tseng Shih-Yun; they are based on swans and symbolize the separation of soul and consciousness. The white birds are wearing brightly colored clothes—a metaphor for the various roles people need to play in life. In addition, the frame of the work and the bottom of the painting are made of a composite resin fiber the artist made herself. She added additional materials to further harden it and extend its shelf life, making this paper pulp different from ordinary pulp. Tseng Shih-Yun is very interested in past and present lives. Will the consciousness generated at certain moments lead us back into the past? The two fairy birds in the painting look at each other, alluding to these past and present lives, and their other selves in parallel worlds. The sun-like beams radiating from the center of the work allows the two birds’ souls to connect and intersect for an instant.
