In Horsetrack, artist Chen Kuei-Yen created a fictional racecourse in the shape of an ashtray, and the horse in the picture is a metaphor for smokers. Observing people with the smoking habit, he felt that they were seeking a kind of spiritual sustenance, and that as they puffed out smoke, they were expressing emotions but also expelling a part of their souls. They were like the horse in the picture, walking in circles in search of an outlet for their thoughts, and going nowhere. Chen Kuei-Yen depicts the horsetrack in cool tones that create a space where time seems to stand still. In the color processing, he would mix two or more colors with sandpaper or a pen when the paint was semi-dry in order to create a kind of indistinct color and make things seem old and blurred. At the same time, it gave the whole piece a more uniform tonality.
