Green Man / Woman

Artist Hsu Yin-Ling created Green Man / Woman during the COVID-19 pandemic as a means of marking that particular moment for humankind. The figure of the title is a human-shaped sculpture placed on a pedestal at the center of a fountain in a building or courtyard. Its face and head are covered with flowering plants, so one might regard it as a symbol of rebirth. The fountain pool, however, is green with algae, one of the most primitive organisms on earth. On the other hand, human beings, who evolved billions of years later, depend on the oxygen produced by algae and plants. During the pandemic, when society was wracked with fear about the unknown, Hsu still believed in the strength of the human life force, but the pandemic did prompt reflection on the need to treat the environment with a humbler attitude.
