A popular song’s description of a goldfish with only three seconds of memory inspired the artist Lin Chung-Wei. Since 2012, he has been working on his “Urban Drifting” series, which compares fish to humans and depicts the moments when people are swimming leisurely through the city, but at the same time, they are alone. Dating after Work depicts the common experience of urban men and women who get off from work and drag their tired bodies to find their partners in a vast sea of people. The one facing the viewer across the table is a Pearlscale goldfish, and the one with its back to the viewer is a “Red Cap Oranda.” They may face each other, but their gaze does not meet—like shy men and women who have just met for the first time. It is a reflection of the current situation of many modern urbanites who are inept at socializing due to technology. The two goldfish also lack their usual gorgeous, saturated colors. Their pale white color suggests the fatigue and weakness of after-hours office workers. The dim tone of the cafe in the background accentuates the overall quiet atmosphere.
