In High Speed Relations, artists Ling Tien and Fan Hsuan shot images of high-speed trains traveling back and forth from Taipei and Kaohsiung during one day to discuss the relationships among time, space and visual experience. The somatosensory experience of speed for people who are seated inside a moving object actually differs significantly from what the speed of movement is, so the artists present the difference between the two by an array of 12 moving images, six above and six below. The lower row shows window views shot from inside the high-speed rail, but rotated 90 degrees. These “near to far” views symbolize the passengers’ perspective. The upper row presents an objective point of view, with “low to high” images recorded by satellite. The two contrasting sets of pictures highlight the differences in one’s perceived speed from different heights and distances within the same time and space. The entire video, which lasts 9 hours, also provides a different interpretation of Taiwan’s landscape.
