When we magnify the stamen of a flower a thousand times, what will we see? This kind of curiosity motivated the artist Zeng Siang-Syuan to take a microscope and begin to observe the world through the microcosms of plants. The shape of Endogenous Flower is a huge pistil ovary, with the opening turned slightly outward, waiting for the moment of pollination, though he tried to break away from the idea of re-presenting nature. At the bottom, the flower’s thalamus or receptacle was fired in platinum, giving it a metallic luster that symbolizes a sense of technology and contrasts with the black and white colors of the rest of the piece. He threw the clay on a wheel and paddled it into the embryo shape with a natural arc. The interlacing network in the white glaze resembles the “gold threads and iron wires” of Song dynasty Ge ware—the lines are clearly visible. They represent the plant’s vascular structure, which transports water and nutrients, but the artist also boldly compares it with today’s Internet, which quickly transports information.
