Through the meticulous design of artist Cheng Ming-Fan, his Flowing Light Container No. 1 shows how light and shadow changes as light penetrates through the transparent and translucent glass from top to bottom. The blue and pink colors in the lower part are the result of his ingenious use of enamel to transform the colors. Cheng, who was born to a family of glass craftsmen, created it by using a special technique: he let hot, melted glass sink by gravity through a wire mesh, and after it cooled, it became a one-piece glass work. Even so, he had to have an accurate grasp of the height, thickness, and other conditions of the flowing glass, including the color of the glass after it melted into the enamel. The work was a test of his ability to control the medium. Although the glass flowed to different lengths, the work is well-proportioned. The unevenness of the glass “columns” still resulted in a balanced aesthetic.
