Artist Liu Jung-Ying was deeply involved in ink painting for many years, with a special focus on bird-and-flower painting. This work, Sophisticated, inherits her traditional style. The background appears as if it is layered with different shades of ink to create a hazy, obscure atmosphere, and the birds and flowers, which appear to be in colored ink, symbolize the pursuit of tranquility and peace amid turmoil. But this is not the ordinary ink and color on rice paper. Here she tried using the traditional techniques, but with acrylic on canvas, using the layering of paint and blacks and whites to create a sense of space. Taiwan’s rich variety of birds and flowers and its diverse ecology provides Liu with an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The vivid changes of “ink” tonality and colors allow the space in the painting to expand freely, and viewers can sense the otherworldly, ethereal aesthetics from her soft brushstrokes.
