Artist Chang Ting-Chen created this work based on her memory of being shocked by the mountainous scenery of Tibet when she first traveled on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. She felt that Tibet’s high-altitude climate was somehow pure, clear, and calm, and that the towering mountains made her feel sincere respect for nature. In Concentrating—2, she composes the scene from the perspective of looking upward from the foot of a mountain to its peak—a perspective that can convey one’s awe of nature’s power. She uses only black and white in the painting to express a sense of purity, using Eastern gouache combined with the brush techniques of ink painting and delicate, clean lines to draw the mountain peak covered in thin, light snow. She flexibly uses different shades of pigment and different degrees of coverage to create a vague atmosphere throughout the composition.
