作品賞析
Artist Cheng Yu-Hung tries to break new ground in the world of calligraphy with bold, free lines and many colors. His Lingfei I, II, III is composed of three panels, for the three expressions ziyou (freedom), Guanzizai (an alternate name for the bodhisattva Guanyin), and miaoyou (wondrous existence), but he has broken the characters up and scattered the pieces, preserving only parts of them. The cursive script written in golden ink dances with brisk agility and expresses the longing for a free life. Thick black lines, resembling those of seal script, serve as visual balance. In the background, arranged seemingly at random, are blocks of bright, lively colors. Whether one views a panel in isolation or all three together, there is a strong sense of rhythm. One can see also that Cheng Yu-Hung has also been influenced by the spray paint technique of graffiti art. For him, the “line” in calligraphy is an emotional sign. From the motion of the hand to the traces of the brush, it is an expression of the calligrapher’s physical and mental state at the moment of writing.
