In her younger days, the artist Lin Jyu-Jhen focused on ink and watercolor painting, but later on she became very interested in Eastern gouache and tried experimenting with its various possibilities to present tranquil scenes. In recent years, most of her works center on water waves, rays of light, and reflections on water; she tries to capture the balance between reality and reflected illusion. In Green Reflection IV, she uses the reflective luster of the Eastern gouache medium to permanently preserve the sparkling instant of light on water. The red dragonfly adds some warmth to the overall blue-green tone of the painting, while at the same time expressing the theme of being unrestrained and free. The dragonfly is surrounded by an area brightened by gold foil, and the grasses in the lower right corners are one of Lin’s personal motifs, symbolizing tenacious vitality.
