作品賞析
In his early years as an artist, Lin Chun-Hong studied both ink and watercolor painting. After he decided to work in Eastern gouache, he still followed his former ways of using watercolor while adopting the Oriental aesthetics of contrasting expressive techniques between filled-in and blank spaces and light and heavy applications of ink. After integrating the spirit of the East and the West, he internalized it into his creative logic. This is the first of Lin’s Flying series, which depict quiet scenes in mountain wilderness areas where butterflies and birds freely spread their wings. It reflects the ideas of Laozi and Zhuangzi, which the artist learned while studying ink painting in his early years; it expresses the idea of transforming into a butterfly and retreating to the mountains and forests. The overall color is like that of a yellowed photo, and the periphery is washed and feature simulated mildew spots—the kind found on old photos—so there is a warm, nostalgic mood to it. The fern leaves at the center are pasted with gold leaf, which is unusual because the general creative method only uses gold leaf as a background. Here it is used to create more layers of light and shadow, creating a low-key but splendid aesthetic of contrast.
