After studying lacquer crafts for 20 years, artist Peng Ya-Ling turned to the field of “lacquer painting,” bringing traditional craft techniques into the realm of artistic creation and expanding the creative space of modern art media. Lacquerware is a symbol of good taste in Japan, where it often appears in the life of ordinary families. In Taiwan, although lacquerware is not as popular, the natural environment is quite suitable for making it. Original Heart was inspired by the scenery outside the window of Peng Ya-Ling’s studio. She simulated the window scene through the triple screen composition and painted the shining green of pineapples fields under ample sunlight. The painting process here is comparable with the lacquer art process. First, green-tinted gold leaf is pasted on a decorative panel coated with black primer, and then the greenery is carefully painted with a maki-e brush. The overall atmosphere of the work is quiet and peaceful, which serves to remind us of maintaining the original heart or intent behind the act of creation, so that it will last forever, like the lacquer.
