Golden and Silver Mountain—Native Place No. 1 is the first of a series of works that were inspired by the memories of the artist Gao Zhenxue from the time she was an artist-in-residence in Kinmen County. She uses a dark brown greenhouse frame to represent the concept of native place and home. The colorful birds in this painting are the migratory “blue-tailed bee-eaters” that fly to Kinmen every summer to reproduce. Some are spreading their wings, as if about to leave, while others perch quietly on the frame of their home. As with a person’s choice of home, there is no right or wrong in deciding whether to stay or leave, but the signs of one’s original home are always imprinted on the body. Where the birds’ bodies overlap the frame, the frame is replaced by grey, which symbolizes the indelible imprint of one’s original home. Among the mountain-shaped geometric color blocks below, the wrinkles on the paper surface are the result of the artist first crumpling the paper, and then using a mouth atomizer airbrush to apply the paint, thus creating the layers of changing color.
