Jiufen has a history of repeated prosperity and decline due to the ups and downs of the gold mining and tourism industries, so in the eyes of artist Liu Wen-der, this mountain town has no fixed appearance. He sketched this mountain city with ink. Usually, he makes his own paper, but here he also took advantage of the properties of rice paper, which can be torn, stained, and mounted, to take the images of the mountain town that he gathered and dismantle them one by one. Then he collaged them to make Mountain City Impression. He used the deconstructive method to arrange the buildings from different perspectives, from high to low, cleverly showing the way that this city is connected by steps, one of its distinctive features. We also see images of the sun and moon—the crescent moon or partially eclipsed sun near the center, and the sun in the lower left. The composition thus brings sun and moon together, allowing day and night to coexist.
