Artist Yang Shih-ting presents this work as a traditional Chinese scroll painting, so it leads the viewer step by step from right to left, into a classical world of his own creation. The fish swimming leisurely symbolizes a person who wanders through a garden, a kind of artificially created nature. Potted plants, a Taihu rock, and chairs in the shape of officials’ hats are set here and there in the landscaping, like clues prompting the viewer to explore the relationship between man and nature. A low wall of white stone bricks, like a zoo boundary, separates the man-made and natural areas. The red organic fluff outside the wall shows infinite variety and is seems to spread out as endlessly as the imagination. The artist’s use of a large quantity of red is rare for an ink painting, and suggests a latent passion behind the surface tranquility.
