How do you feel when you utterly weary and strolling through the deserted city in the early morning and see a convenience store with lights on? Artist Li Jun wei here attempts to describe the feeling of being “lonely in the middle of the night.” In his Perpetually Daytime, he created a city where insects live. The exterior walls of the buildings, which are all similarly shaped, are covered by creeping plants. The source of light on the street is a 24-hour convenience store. On the backs of tiny insects in the shore grow beautiful flowers. On the rice paper, Li creates the moist colors of ink wash layer by layer, which imbues the scene with a peaceful atmosphere. He combines daily life with fantasy to construct a city with insects as the main characters—a metaphor for the way human beings coexist with their society.
