The artist Chang Chun-Hsiung often expresses contemporary issues using methods emulating tradition. His painting, Hunt, is a composition with a long, vertical axis and fine brushwork and color. The background scene is like that of a traditional painting, with green mountains and rivers, but the mist and cloud surrounding the mountains are actually smog from several modern buildings and factories on the plateaus and ledges. In the foreground is a hunting scene—an ancient theme—but the main figure, still in traditional costume, is riding a motorcycle and chasing pheasants on a “one-way street.” The hunting dog beside him is chasing rabbits, and an eagle is watching from above. The prey being chased also implies the goals that modern people pursue. Chang carefully composed this scene so that it would be full of dramatic tension. The brown spots appearing on the top of the painting are supposed to represent the mottling that often appear with time on old paintings, while the integration of contemporary elements fills the composition with contradiction and conflict.
