For artist Liu Yu-Wen, although ink wash and fine brushwork in traditional painting are colorful and brilliant, she wants to break the rules of using colors with clear boundaries. In Fields of the Countryside V, she took the background plant images from the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Book, which introduced ink painting techniques depicting landscapes, flowers, birds, and insects, and she depicted the scene of a place on a busy road that she must pass by in real life. The convex traffic mirror in the painting reflects more of the pastoral scenery. Liu Yu-Wen combines the color expression techniques of Western painting with ink painting and breaks through the conventional impressions of what ink painting is. In this composition, one can see ink washes, meticulous brushwork, and soft gouache coloring all at once. Moreover, she uses Western stippling technique when neatly juxtaposing small dots of contrasting colors in the painting, which adds a sense of layering and highlights the hazy beauty of ink painting.
