Artist Ou Jiun-You once underwent a major surgery. Starting from this experience, which was like a turning point in her life, she developed a series of creations called “Non-Badland,” in which she examines her body from a distanced, third-person perspective. “Badland” is a term used to describe a desolate terrain, often with deep gullies, formed after the natural erosion of sedimentary rocks. For Ou, such forms are not only like scars on the earth, but also like scars on the body. She used an anvil to extend the aluminum alloy material, and she carefully crafted the dents and wrinkles, as if creating a series of scars. The surface of this sandblasted work has a matte texture, which symbolizes the pale body and trapped helplessness; the mirror-polished part on the turning point represents the moment of helplessness and the pursuit of light.
