作品賞析
Through this sculpture, Sight, the artist Tien Hsin-I expresses her confusion about sexual orientation, while at the same time highlights the fluidity of gender. The themes of “contrast” and “symmetry” frequently appear in her works. The sharp-edged metal frame divides the space into two, and the doll-like figures on each side are short and incomplete, wearing symmetrical costumes. These refer to the lack of mature gender awareness among children. The lack of an upper body in both figures expresses her one-time resistance to confronting gender issues, and she also tries to draw the viewer’s consciousness into it, so that it becomes a part of the work. The artist cleverly uses the ceramic firing process as a metaphor for the pulling process between the self and the environment: the clean, pure clay symbolizes the “self,” while the kiln represents the “external environment,” and the cracks produced during the firing process are like the scars left from one’s interaction with the environment.
