For ceramist Wang An-Pei, creation is a process of continuous inward self-exploration, and one must dig layer by layer in order to find the deepest self. This work, Circle / Prototype #6 – Support, was selected for inclusion in the 2020 Taiwan International Ceramic Biennale. From a clay slab, Wang made hollow circles, life’s most primitive appearance, to which one returns after the spirit has entered the realm of “selflessness.” The image reflected by the mirror surface is a metaphor for “seeing one’s original heart.” Ceramics is one of the oldest handicrafts in human civilization. The soil breeds all things, and human beings play with the soil in order to constant bring civilization forward. Wang An-Pei incised the “rope patterns” found in ancient pottery in her work, in order to express the creative idea of “following ancient memories, returning to the original heart, and finding the original self.”
