Stepping out from the waves on the coast, with the coldness permeating his body, as if he were still tightly embraced by the ocean—these are some of Pan Chin-Jui’s deepest childhood memories from the time he grew up in Yilan. When he was a child, his parents often took him to Taiwan’s northeast coast, where he could play in the water. The vast sea always stimulated him and expanded his imagination. In this print, Stepping in Waves, he recalls his close relationship with the ocean and explores the essence and value of life. The large mass of clouds and mist in the center symbolizes a life full of unknowns and uncertainties, which are always changing and difficult to clarify. However, the feet stretching down from the clouds and mist and walking out from the waves on to the shore appear to be on heading confidently onto solid ground.
