Chen Chao-Pei, an artist had been doing ink painting for a long time, tried to find the “landscapes” of daily urban life instead of depicting vast, majestic natural landscapes, hoping to arouse viewers’ feelings with themes closer to their lives. In Stones of the City—The Riverside, the two wooden boxes symbolize “storage.” On the left side, we see everyday scenes from the Fuhe Bridge riverside area depicted in ink. There are animals, people, and buildings of different sizes, like fragments of memory, scattered next to the blue stream and surrounded by wedelia, which grow profusely by the river.In the box on the right side are “stones of the city,” such as red bricks, cement, broken tiles, and stones picked up by the artist. The two sides thus present a contrast between scenes reconstructed through memory and painting and the collected objects from those scenes.
