The artist Hsieh Chun-Yu is good at using colored pencils and ballpoint pens to depict the textures of his subjects. When these media are used together, a concave-convex effect is produced on the paper surface, which enhances the work’s three-dimensionality. Here he uses for his subject the common “egg,” with which he explores the perception between the two parties of a relationship of watching and being watched. He believes that the “eggshell” is like the image and personality of the subject when viewed by others, and it is deeply scrutinized by various cultures and social classes, while the enclosed part of the egg, fragile and soft, is the part that other people tend to overlook. In this work, white symbolizes the eggshell, while the large red area is the world within the eggshell—a metaphor for the chaotic, elusive, ever-changing thoughts and states in the human heart, and a symbol for process of continuous excavation, from the outside to the inside, that the artist engages in while creating this series.
