The artist Huang Jing Jhong’s Endless #1 derives from family history and personal experience. His family originally ran a papermaking business that switched to the making of gold paper and incense aromatics. For this reason, Huang tried developing artworks using bamboo charcoal as a creative medium, together with gold paper. Bamboo charcoal is a material that has gone through many ups and downs—like Huang’s own life. After the bamboo is tempered with fire, it changes to carbonized bamboo charcoal, and in Huang’s works, it becomes a metaphor for life’s impermanence and cyclic changes. Huang uses differences in shape, color, and surface in the pieces of bamboo charcoal and painstakingly arranges the composition and expression of the work using mosaic collage technique. The resulting composition is an image of convergence, dispersion, and continuous flow.
