Artist Shih Zih-Ting’s Blue Submarine – Battle Damage Version has a base of thick cardboard. The artist used oil paint to imitate the shape and appearance of Taiwan’s early transformer boxes. In the place where the electric meter should have been, he placed the neck of a classical guitar—perhaps he was suggesting how he plays the guitar to relieve life’s pressures and create a sense of expanded space. He skillfully uses the oil paint to transform the cardboard into something with a realistic shape. Although the transformer box and guitar are unrelated objects, the artist uses them to create an artificial reality, an absurd surreal vision, allowing viewers to freely use their imaginations and reinterpret the objects and symbols in the work.
